MYSA Teams Warm Up At Chilly GUFC Friendlies
League Wizard | February 18, 2011To help prepare for the upcoming season, nine of the MYSA’s travel teams traveled to Greensboro to participate in the Guilford United/Omega Sports Spring Kickoff Feb 5th and 6th. We were excited to send such a large contingent of our teams to play against teams from GUFC, TCYSA, GYS, GUFC, CUFC, and more. When a significant rain storm rolled through the area Thursday and Friday, it looked like the event would be canceled due to soggy field conditions, but GUFC worked through the day and night to obtain indoor/artificial turf field space and realign the schedules so all teams could play their games.
With almost the entire schedule moved to the Greensboro Sportsplex or Smith Soccer Complex, which has artificial turf fields, the event went ahead. Small sided teams (U9-U12) moved indoors at the Greensboro Sportsplex and played 5v5 indoor matches on the beautiful indoor fields there. With glass walls, it provided a great opportunity for many of our younger players to experience the fast paced indoor game where you can play the ball off the walls. Players, coaches, and parents alike had fun watching our youngest travel players learn and adjust to a new style of soccer.
Meanwhile the older teams moved to the beautiful Smith Soccer Complex with three full sided artificial turf fields. Both Challenge and Classic teams faced off against a variety of opponents and overall the MYSA teams had much success as players adjusted to the VERY fast paced play on artificial turf. While Saturday was chilly and damp, Sunday turned into a beautiful sunny day for soccer as the teams closed out their schedules.
We’d like to thank GUFC for going above and beyond in their efforts to ensure the event took place despite the bad weather. It took a lot of work and we’re grateful for their efforts! We hope to send even more teams next year! Be sure to view our photo album for this event!
