Fall 2010 Rec Tournament ChampionsLeague Wizard | February 6, 2011
The Fall 2010 Recreation Tournament was our league’s largest Rec tournament so far, with six divisions. It also represented our league’s goal of moving away from single elimination brackets to more exciting group play or double elimination formats. This ensured each team would play at least two matches in the tournament and have plenty of chances to show off all they had learned during the season. Coaches – if you have team pictures of your championship or finalist team (or blurbs about your experience), please send them in so we can add them! Send them to us at [email protected].

Under 12 West Division
Champion: #3 Rhinos (1-7-0) Finalist: #1 Strikers (2-5-1) Format: Round Robin Official Results
The U12 West tournament provided more suspense to the very end than any other division. With a Round Robin format, the champion and finalists would be decided by points – 1 for a draw, 3 for a win, 4 for a shutout. With two early wins, the Strikers seemed to have things locked up with 6 points headed into the final day. However, a draw in their final match meant they finished with 7 points. The Rhinos had earned a shutout bonus point in their second match and with a shutout in the last match of the tournament, they would win with 8 points. Sensing the role of spoilers, the Kiro Kids played an inspired final match trying desperately to score, but in the end the Rhinos earned their second shutout 6-0 and won the U12 West division championship.
Under 12 East Division
Champion: #1 Hot Shots (8-0-0) Finalist: #2 Phoenix (6-1-1) Format: Double Elimination Official Results
The U12 East tournament was expected to be a ho hum affair as the #1 Hot Shots had rolled through their season undefeated (8-0-0) scoring 57 goals and allowing only 8. They won their matches by an average margin of over 6 goals! But the regular season goes out the window when the tournament starts and many teams were looking to avenge their regular season losses to the Hot Shots. The #5 Storm (4-4-0) came out swinging, beating the #4 Highlanders (5-2-1). The next evening, they faced the Hot Shots and with a smothering defense, held the Hot Shots to a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation. The #5 Storm then pulled off the upset of the season, winning the match in a penalty kick shootout 1-0. The #2 Phoenix (6-1-1), with what appeared to be a tougher road to the finals, won both of their matches, including one against the Storm, which advanced them to the finals and setup a rematch between the Storm and Hot Shots. The Hot Shots avenged their early loss, beating the Storm 5-0 and earning a spot in the final. So after a chaotic round of preliminary matches, #1 and #2 faced off in the final. In a very exciting and evenly played match, both teams had numerous chances to score but could not convert. The Hot Shots finally pulled ahead on a long arcing shot into goal and held on to win 1-0 as the Phoenix frantically worked to even things up before time expired. It was a very well played and exciting final – congratulations to all the U12 teams who made this a tournament to remember!
Champion: #1 Fury (8-0-0) Finalist: #3 Spartans (4-4-0) Format: Double Elimination Official Results
The undefeated Fury (8-0-0) had high hopes of continuing their success in the U14 tournament and in the end were successful, but there were some exciting moments along the way! Three matches in the U14 division were decided by shootouts, including the final double elimination match between the #1 Fury and #2 Shockwave. After an exciting 3-3 draw on a cool Friday night, the Fury advanced to the final 4-2 in the penalty shootout to face the #3 Spartans who had won their own penalty shootout against the Shockwave early in the tournament (2-2 aet, 3-1 PSO). On a warm and sunny Saturday, the Fury and Spartans battled it out with neither team able to put the match away until the Fury pulled ahead 3-2 towards the end of the second half and repelled numerous attacks from the Spartans trying to even things up.
Under 18/High School Division
Champion: #1 Green Machine (7-1-0) Finalist: #2 Hurricanes (5-2-1) Format: Double Elimination Official Results
The U18 tournament provided a clear example of why the double elimination format is so exciting. With opening wins under their belts, the #1 Green Machine and #2 Hurricanes faced off in the 2nd round. The Hurricanes pulled off an exciting 2-1 upset win, advancing to the finals and sending the Green Machine into the loser bracket. Having fought their way through the same bracket after an early loss, the #3 Patriots hoped to come off two dramatic shutouts and be spoilers to the Green Machine, but fell 0-1 as the Green Machine climbed out of the bracket into the final. The Hurricanes and Green Machine battled back and forth for 70 minutes unable to get the ball into the net and a very exciting match ended regulation in a 0-0 draw. The Green Machine, clinched the championship with a 3-1 penalty shoot out win.
We want to send a shout out to all the coaches and parents who rearranged their busy schedules to accommodate a busier than normal tournament schedule. The end result was one of the more exciting Rec tournaments in recent memory and we couldn’t have done it without you! All the teams got to play a lot of soccer and show off all they had learned. In the end – that’s what it’s all about!
