A number of our parents have bellsouth.net email addresses. This month they stopped working, likely since BellSouth doesn’t really exist any more. If your parent account is still linked to a bellsouth.net email address, please try to update it so you’ll continue to receive important league updates. Or try creating a Google Gmail account so you’ll have an email address you can use with any ISP.
Due to the recent storm and more storms on the way, all MYSA activities scheduled for Thursday August 5th are CANCELED
Parents and Coaches,
As August begins, we’re busy working to assign a record number of players to teams across 12 Recreational divisions. We’ve adjusted our dates a bit:
Week of Aug 10th: Rosters out, coaches contact teams
August 16th: Rec Practices Start
September 10th: Rec Matches Start
Coach and Team Manager workshops will be held in mid August (dates coming soon)
We still need coaches at a number of age groups to ensure everyone gets a chance to play this season. At the younger age groups, if you are good with kids, you can coach. We will provide training and equipment for you. At the older age groups – we really need some experienced coaches to consider coaching a team their child is not on, or some assistant coaches to finally make the jump to head coaching.
U5 Boys: need 1-2 more
U5 Girls: need 1-2 more
U6 Boys: need 6 more
U6 Girls: need 3 more
U7 Boys: need 1 more
U7 Girls: OK
U8 Boys: OK
U8 Girls: need 1 more
U10 Coed: need 4-5 more
U12 Coed: need 3-4 more
U14 Coed: OK
HS Coed: need 1 more
[Take your child’s age on July 31st, add one and put a U in front to get their ‘soccer age’ like ‘U’nder 5 or ‘U’nder 12 (includes U11)]
Please contact Alan Huffman at [email protected] if you are interested in coaching or have questions. He will get you in touch with the proper division coordinator as well as our Director of Coaching who can help you with preparing for your team. If you coached last year – don’t assume we know you plan to continue coaching. If you aren’t listed here: http://soccersys.mebanesoccer.us/teams.php then let Alan know you still want to coach!
As you can see, we need a LOT of coaches. It can be a scary prospect to agree to take a team, but it can also be a very rewarding experience. We’ve managed not to turn any players away for 8 years now and would like to keep that streak alive – so consider volunteering today!
We expect to have over 95 Recreational teams this season. Every one of those teams will need a team manager. Once teams are announced, if you think you can help your coach with team administration, please let them know. The league provides an extensive handbook to help you manage a team: http://mebanesoccer.us/files/2008/10/MYSATeamManagerHandbook_v1_3.pdf
Due to a number of factors (coed split in U5-U8, U8 (1yr) to U10 (2yr), coaches aging up or retiring, etc) this Fall will see *significant* upheaval in terms of team rosters. So there is a VERY strong chance your child may not play for a team they’ve been on for a few years or if they are, the team may be very different. This is not a bad thing. It will allow us to re-balance and ensure all divisions are made up of competitive teams. This means some more effort is required as we assign coaches, identify sponsors, and so on. So we appreciate your patience.
Once rosters are assigned, links to paperwork will appear in your online parent accounts. Complete that paperwork and bring it to your first practice along with your $30 registration fee.
We also are facing a significant issue with field space this year. The soccer complex was in rough shape after the Spring season, so we’ve decided to keep it closed until after Labor Day to allow the turf as much recovery time as possible. This means all practices will be at alternative locations (Mebane Baseball Fields, the Eurosport Soccer Center near Buckhorn Rd, etc) in August. So for the first three weeks, most Rec teams will likely only have ONE practice a week. When the complex opens in September, we should be able to provide teams with a 2nd practice slot like always. However, we will still be utilizing other facilities throughout the Fall. So if your team does not practice at the main complex, don’t take it as some type of ‘hardship’. The turf at the baseball fields is in great shape and the Eurosport Soccer Center is a fantastic facility. Our league is growing and the days of everything being located at one facility are coming to an end, so please be prepared for that.
Enjoy the rest of your summer and we’ll see you on the fields soon!
Due to the weather, all MYSA fields are closed and all practices scheduled for Tuesday June 27th are canceled
Even though the season has not started yet, there is a lot going on! Here’s a quick review of some upcoming events:

The British are coming!! The British are coming!!
Challenger British Soccer Camp is almost upon us!! Not this week but next! July 19 – 23!
One of the highlights of the week is the Local coaches vs. British coaches game. This years game will be held at the Baseball Fields at 7pm on Thursday, July 22nd.
Coaches who wish to play – please be there by 6:30! You WILL need to warm up. The more of us that are in attendance the better! We will need to get organized. Substitutions will be liberal I’m sure because, as it turns out, fresh legs are our only real weapon against the superior skill and wretched tirelessness of the British Coaches. Note: we do have two ringers this year so at the very least the goal differential should be lower and the over-under should be a little higher this year. Check the Vegas books.
Parents and players, if you are attending camp or not, come on out for some entertainment. Plus, watch your child’s coach and see how he/she performs on the field, under pressure. Imagine during the upcoming season, as your child’s coach screams “encouragement” at your child, being able to come back with “You mean like you did in the game against the British Coaches, Chip?”
Playing or spectating we hope to see you there.
Colin Mellor – Summer Camp Director
Good evening Coaches and Parents!
I wanted to send out a reminder about our Coaches Clinic we are having July 20th! This is a free clinic that is being put on by the British Challenger Camp, the group that puts on the local soccer camp we support each year in Mebane. It will be from 6-8pm. There will be a session for U10 and under coaches and one for U11 and older coaches. This course will actually carry a certification for one year, that will have a membership, along with literature. Again, this is a free Clinic that will be very interactive and be a huge leg up in helping you plan your soccer practices and soccer season this year. I am sending this to the coaches and parents, in case there are any parents who are looking to help volunteer and coach this season. We hope to have many of you join the MYSA Coaching ranks!!
Please see this handout for complete details: Challenger Soccer/NSCAA Coaching Clinic
If you will please reply to [email protected] if you are planning to attend, we would appreciate it. We would like to get a head count so we can plan the evening.
Please feel free to email or call with any questions!
Thanks and we hope to see you on July 20th!!
Director of Coaching
Our league serves over 1,100 children a year at all levels of soccer. A common misconception is that the people who help run the league are paid (we’re not – only the referees and travel team trainers are) or that we’re a City of Mebane department (we’re not – we’re an independent non-profit corporation) So we rely on volunteers to not only coach our teams, but also help run the league. A lot of work goes into ensuring 1,100+ children can just show up and practice and/or play matches.
Parents and Coaches,
The Fall soccer season is always the ‘season of change’ in youth soccer. With the soccer ‘year’ running August 1st to July 31st, this is the season the league will often work to improve our programs and make changes based on the past year or years.
I wanted to share a few of these with you to ensure everyone understands what the league is trying to accomplish and the steps we’re taking to constantly improve our programs.
Please take the time to read this entire email as it highlights numerous things the league is doing to ensure our programs are still the best they can be. We have held extensive discussions this summer over numerous issues and are doing our best to enact changes we believe are in the best long term interests of the players – at all levels.
If you plan to coach/assist/manage a team this fall, help us get a head start on Risk Management!
and update your RM profile. Be sure to select at least ONE age level/position.
Once you’ve updated your profile, let our RM coordinator know at: [email protected] so she can push you through for a background check. Be sure to include your full name as it appears in your profile to make her job easier.
Every year we have coaches who cannot access their team info when rosters come out because they never did RM. Background checks can take up to a week – so the earlier the better.
Coaches (and parents thinking of coaching),
During the summer, the NCYSA holds a number of coaching classes, including some right here in Mebane. The MYSA requires coaches to be certified within one year of starting to coach.
- U5-U8 Should have Youth I
- U10-U12 Should have Youth II
- U13-U18 Should have an E LIcense
A complete schedule of classes can be found here: https://www.youthleaguesusa.com/ncysa/2008/school/Directory.html
We will be hosting a few classes here in Mebane, so PLEASE try to take the class here if you can – if they don’t have enough coaches for a class, they often get canceled:
- July 23rd-25th E License – Mebane, NC
- Aug 1st Youth I 9-3 – Mebane, NC
- Aug 1st Youth II 9-3 – Mebane, NC
Do NOT send in a payment if you register for a Mebane class – we will send in one check for all the MYSA coaches. Once you register, send a copy of your registration to our Director of Coaching ([email protected]) so he can keep track.
Remember – the MYSA will reimburse the full cost of most coaching classes taken elsewhere. Pay at registration and submit a copy of your license/certificate and registration form to the MYSA treasurer ([email protected]) to get reimbursed.
Just a reminder that the deadline for registering for the Fall 2010 Recreation soccer season is July 4th! Registrations received after July 4th will be subject to a $10 late fee.
You can register online at: http://mebanesoccer.us/parent-login/
If your browser has trouble and you don’t get a login screen, try upgrading to the latest version or use this URL: http://soccersys.mebanesoccer.us/parents/
As you can see, we’ve finally gotten our mailing lists back online. We apologize for the lack of communication late last year. We’ll be sending a number of announcements in the coming week to get caught up – so bear with us.
It’s not too late to register for the MYSA British Soccer Camp! Reserve your child’s spot in one of the largest Challenger British Soccer Camps in the southeast! Each day is filled with fun activities, games, and skills development! We have sessions for children as young as 3!
Complete details can be found at http://mebanesoccer.us/programs/summer-camp/
New this year! We’ve added an ‘Advanced Skills Camp’ designed for higher level players like those who participate on travel teams. You can select the Half Day Advanced Camp or the Full Camp Combination (Half Day of Advanced Camp and the rest with the other Full Day campers playing World Cup)
We are also holding an evening ‘half day’ session if you can’t attend the daytime sessions!
We hope your child can join us for another fun week in the sun!
Just a reminder that the MYSA Annual General Meeting will be held tonight at 6:30PM at the Mebane Arts and Community Center.
2010 AGM Agenda
- State of the League
- Election of new Board Members (3 slots available)
- Discussion: Eliminating Coed for U5-U8
All are welcome to attend. However, only registered team volunteers can vote. if you were a coach, assistant coach, team manager, and/or league officer – you receive one vote in the board elections.
If you are unable to attend, please send a completed proxy form with someone who is attending so your vote can be counted.
The fields have taken a bit of a beating this year and need some time to recover. To help with that, the Rec Dept has closed the fields for the summer while they work on them. So please do NOT use the fields for any reason. A number of efforts are underway to improve the turf including over seeding, heavy watering, aerebation, fertilizing, plugging, and more. Summertime is the peak growing season for field turf, so we want to give them a chance to fill in as much as possible. Thanks for your patience and understanding. We have not set an opening date yet.
MYSA Travel Tryouts scheduled for Wed June 2nd are CANCELED
Makeup Tryouts for Girls and Boys
Thu June 3rd: U8-U11 6-7PM and U12-U18 7-8PM
It’s OK if you can only make one night of makeups
We may schedule another night of tryouts – currently being discussed
We have also updated our coaching assignments for 2010-2011, which can be seen on our Travel Team Tryout page.
The MYSA is excited to announce that starting this summer, we will be accepting credit and debit cards for payment of travel soccer fees. By popular demand, you can now pay some or all of your travel fees with a credit or debit card at registration. We also hope to be able to process subsequent payments in person or via phone. Once we get the travel side underway, we’ll be investigating the feasibility of accepting cards for payment of Recreation fees in future years – either in person or online when you register. We are also investigating the possibility of electronic check processing to allow for immediate withdraw of fees via check to vastly improve our processing turnaround.
The Mebane Youth Soccer Association has chosen a new travel team kit and vendor for the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 seasons. The MYSA has chosen the Ireland jersey and Rome shorts from Score Sports for it’s travel team kits. In addition to the travel team kits, the league’s agreement with Score will provide MYSA recreational teams with special pricing on uniforms, coaching equipment, and more. Customization of the travel team uniforms will be done by Mebane Sports & Trophies.
Congratulations to the following MYSA soccer teams for finishing in first place in their respective divisions for the Spring 2010 regular season!
